I wanted to leave my comfort zone and tackle an area of environmental design I don't usually do: city landscapes.
I've always kept to natural locations, like forests, waterfalls, and etc, and decided that, as a part of my practice, I'd really try something new for me.
The main goal of the piece was to present scale and depth using architecture, and I decided to use the city of Tokyo as my base. I chose to achieve this by using Tokyo Tower as a tangible measurement point of how far into the city you are. The scale of it's placement was important, showing that you're deep into Tokyo, but still a fair way off from reaching on of its major landmarks.
The scene is set atop the roof of a building, with the chaos of the streets below our of view of the character, and the horizon line is filled entirely with the rooftops of office buildings, entertainment centers and and more. To push lighting, the hue of the giant neon sign takes priority, bringing a orange hue into the scene.
In the desire to provide narrative in the environment, I added a digital texture in the sky and data streams flying through the city to push a "virtual" visual style to the landscape.
Overall, I'm very pleased with what I managed to achieve and has really boosted my confidence in tackling more ambitious and complex pieces in the future.
